Samuel A. Riggs House

The Samuel A. Riggs House at 1501 Pennsylvania in Lawrence, Kansas is on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in the fields of architecture, politics and government, and western settlement ^[1]

The Samuel A. Riggs House was constructed between 1863 and 1864 in the Italianate or Italian Villa style, for Samuel A. Riggs, possibly with the input of local architect John G. Haskell ^[2]. During construction in 1863, part of the 2 story structure was set on fire by raiders participating in Quantrill's Raid. The east facade suffered the most damage during the raid, as reflected by the different window patterns on that facade. Some of the more notable features of the house are its North facing elevation and its 3 story tower with windows on all sides.
