editDuring the 2022 season, Cleveland SC won a third-consecutive Rust Belt Conference championship and made a playoff run to the Midwest Region title game, falling at that stage against Muskegon Risers.[1] As a regional finalist, Cleveland sat eighth in the NPSL priority order and earned a second straight berth in the U.S. Open Cup. In the first round, they were drawn against Lionsbridge, a USL League Two club from Virginia. The match was scheduled at Drive Morris Stadium in North Olmsted, Ohio, a stadium that Cleveland SC had never played a game at before.[2]
