AJK GENERAL ELECTIONS 2021-REAL ISSUES, VOTERS AND CANDIDATES RESPONSIBILITIES

The AJK General Elections- 2021 for AJK Legislative Assembly are going to be held on July 25, 2021. There are total of 701 candidates in the contest for 45 general seats. These include 579 candidates for 33 constituencies within AJK and 122 for 12 refugee constituencies in Pakistan.

GOVERNMENT BY WAR COUNCIL IN AJ&K The Kashmiris, established first government on 24th October, 1947. It was soon after the liberation of the area from India. It was like a war council having its own rules of business. In this form of Government , they vested all the authority in President. Subsequently, they revised & amended the Rules of Business in 1952 and 1957.

NOMINATION OF PRESIDENT OF AJ&K At first, in the system prevailing from 1947 to 1960, it was customary to nominate the person as a president. The nomination was on the discretion of working committee of Muslim Conference.

INTRODUCTION OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SYSTEM Afterwards, in 1960, they introduced another system called Presidential Election system through AJK. In this system, they nominated president through the votes of basic democrats. This council was consisted of 12 members. They amended this system from time to time also.

SYSTEM OF ADULT FRANCHISE IN AJ&K The Government in 1970 brought the major changes in the system. As a result they introduced the system of adult franchise. Furthermore, they setup a democratic in Azad Jammu and Kashmir through Azad Jammu and Kashmir Act, 1970. First time in the history, the people of AJK get their right to vote and elect their representative.

PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM IN AJK – AJK GENERAL ELECTIONS After that, In 1974, the parliamentary system was introduced in AJ&K. So-far it has undergone almost 11 amendments. At that time the Assembly consisted of 40 members. Since 1975 the Prime Minister of AJ& K is elected by the members of Legislative Assembly who won in their constituencies though votes of people.

UNICAMERAL LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

Unlike in Pakistani Parliament, where there are National Assembly (Lower House) & Senate (Upper house), the Legislative Assembly of AJ&K is Unicameral.  This system of legislation is very simple. There is no need to pass any bill from both houses.
