William Bayes (born April 26, 1951) is an American businessman and politician. He is a member of the Prohibition Party, serving as the party's 2016 nominee for Vice President.
Early life
editBayes was born on April 26, 1951, in Amsterdam, New York, the son of William R. Bayes and his wife Geraldine. Bayes’s father was a soldier and veteran of the Korean War, which caused the family to move frequently. In 1969, Bayes graduated from Biloxi High School in Mississippi, before moving in to study music education at the University of Southern Mississippi.[1]
Bayes worked as a high school band director, and now is a businessman, owning a manufacturing company.[2]
Political career
edit2016 vice presidential campaign
editBayes’ first run for public office was for Vice President in 2016, on the Prohibition Party ticket along with Jim Hedges.[3][4] Bayes stated he joined the party because of the Republican Party's perceived left-wing shift and abandonment of small government.[5] The ticket was on the ballot in 3 states, Arkansas, Colorado, and Mississippi, and gained write-in access in 13 more states. In total, the ticket received 5,617 votes (0.00% of the total popular vote), the most since 1988. However, the ticket failed to receive any electoral votes.
2017 city council campaign
editIn May 2017, Bayes unsuccessfully ran for Ward 3 of the Hattiesburg City Council as a Republican, finishing third in the primary.[6][7][8]
2020 presidential campaign
editBayes has announced his intention to seek the nominations of both the Prohibition and Constitution parties for president in the 2020 election.[6] Bayes has also created a page on Facebook to promote his campaign.
