This is a little-known archetype in the world of performance. Usually performers can be relied upon to want to be the centre of attention. But it happens. As with the fictional trope, The Reluctant Hero (which is the basis of most narrative) the Reluctant Performer has six clear elements to their story:

• Just as the reluctant hero is out of place in an ordinary world (orphans, oddball, loner) the Reluctant Performer is often without or in-between genre as their story - or their show - starts. They have lost their faith in the transformative power of theatre and / entertainment. • There is a call to action. The Reluctant Performer is summoned and enters an extraordinary world • The RP dismisses the call. They get advice from older or wiser advisor. They pick up some sidekicks. • There are three dangerous tasks or battles. • All is lost. This stage often features the death of one or more of the sidekicks • Triumph. The Reluctant Performer goes back to how they were at the start but they are emotional significantly changed. With some belief in theatre restored.
