Joanne (Jo) Hardy (Jo Who, Jo McNeill) was born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 15 February 1952 and spent her early years in Dunedin where her father was the Chief Fire Officer of the Dunedin Fire Brigade. She attended Otago Girls' High School and then moved to Christchurch where she studied ?
Her work was shown as part of the Woman's Art: An Exhibition of Six Women Artists catalogue from the 1975 exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (now the Christchurch Art Gallery)
