Montgomery, Alabama also nicknamed by locals as "The Gump" became a state capital in 1846. The city was named after General Richard Montgomery (hero of the Revolutionary War)' who was killed during the American Revolution in 1775.
History
editMontgomery, AL was the birthplace of the civil rights movement which took place in 1954. The "Civil Rights Movement" ended exactly fifty three years ago in 1968 on April 4th when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray.
Montgomery is home of the oldest historically black college the Alabama State University.
Montgomery, AL is home of Oak Park. A historical park purchased in 1886 and opened to the public in 1889. Many didn't know that in the early 1900s that Oak Park had one of the largest swimming pools in Alabama but unfortunately was filled in due to desegregation and now is closed in by tombstones of people who played an important role to the park.
