Fukumitsu Castle (福光城, Fukumitsu-jō) is a flatland-style Japanese castle located in the city of Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, in the Hokuriku region of Japan. The “Seikaen (栖霞園)” was built on the ruins of the castle in later times and is a designated Historic site of Nanto City.

History

edit

It is said that Mitsuhiro Ishiguro [ja] built this flat castle in the town of Fukumitsu at the end of the Heian period (794-1185).[1] The castle was surrounded by a moat and measured 49 meters east to west by 29 meters north to south, and a castle town was formed around it. The lord was the Ishiguro clan [ja], who ruled the surrounding area from the 12th to the 15th century with Fukumitsu Castle as their base.[1]

However, when Mitsuyoshi Ishiguro [ja] was defeated in the “Battle of Tayagawara [ja]” in 1481, Fukumitsu Castle went up in flames and the Ishiguro family perished.[2] After this, the ruins of Fukumitsu Castle fell into disrepair, but in 1869, the “Seikaen (栖霞園)” was built on the ruins of the castle.[3]
