Significant disasters often cause changes in legislation covering the jurisdiction. This is a chronological list of disasters and disaster legislation created as a result of that disaster.

This does not replace the Lists of Disasters article.

1927: Great Mississippi Flood of 1927

1928: Flood Control Act of 1928 resulting from the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

1950: Federal Disaster Relief Program

1965: Hurricane Betsy

1965: The Flood Control Act (United States) resulting from Hurricane Betsy

1968: National Flood Insurance Program

1970s: Love Canal Disaster

1974: The Disaster Relief Act

1980: Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) as a result of the Love Canal Disaster

1986: Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986, also know as SuperFund, as a result of the 1984 Bhopal disaster. This standard represents OSHA's recognition of ICS.

1988: The Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act

1989: Hurricane Hugo

1989: Loma Prieta earthquake

1989: Exxon Valdez oil spill

1990: Oil Pollution Act of 1990[1] as a result of Exxon Valdez oil spill.

1991: GAO study on Disaster Assistance: Federal, State, and Local Responses to Natural Disasters Need Improvement[2] as a result of 1989: Hurricane Hugo and Loma Prieta earthquake.

1992: Hurricane Andrew

1994: Northridge Earthquake

1996: California Earthquake Authority established as a result of the Northridge Earthquake.

1998: The Florida Building Code established and put in effect by 2002 as a result of Hurricane Andrew.

2001: September 11 attacks

2002: The Homeland Security Act[3]

2003: Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5[4]

2006: The Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act[5]

International

1976: Seveso Disaster, north of Milan in the Lombardy region of Italy resulted in Directive 82/501/EC, also know as the Seveso Directives.

1984: Bhopal gas leak tragedy resulted in US legislation, the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986.

2004: Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, also known as the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, resulted in the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System being activated in 2006.
