Life and career
edit1993-2015: Early life and transition to music
editCaleb De Casper was born in a rural community in North Carolina where they felt that the surrounding community was not accepting of individuals who possessed effeminate or gay characteristics.[9] De Casper attended music school in North Carolina where he studied classical piano and voice for several years before moving to Brooklyn, seeking a more metropolitan lifestyle.[10] After returning to Charlotte, North Carolina to complete music school, De Casper moved to Austin, Texas to pursue his music career.[2][10]
2022: “Femme Boy”
editDe Casper's debut LP, “Femme Boy,” was released in May, 2022. The album features a variety of musical styles and genres, from dance floor beats, the theatrical stage, and the glitz and ruin of old Hollywood.[11] “Femme Boy” consists of 12 songs focusing on themes of desire, allure, and queer sexuality.[11] Collaborating with artists such as p1nkstar and Y2k, De Casper also delves into queer identity and belonging to marginalized groups: their songs have the same message in the end—“outcasts will find themselves and their people.”[2]
Impact and legacy
editDe Casper's performances are renowned for their over-the-top theatricality and versatility.[9] They are additionally known for dynamic and gender nonconforming style and appearance, breaking traditional binary gender norms and dressing in genderqueer and fluid costumes, such as fishnets, dresses, and high heels in order to express the diversity of masculinity and express queer visibility. Currently, De Casper continues to perform at shows, arts events and festivals such as ACL Fest, SXSW and Utopia Fest.[2] In recognition for their contributions to the Austin queer community, the City of Austin proclaimed April 21, 2022 to be Caleb De Casper Day, with the honors being presented by Mayor Steve Adler, a month before the release of their debut album.
