Bodo Sperlein
Life and Work
editBodo Sperlein is a product designer, specialising in home accessories. He was born in Germany, before moving to London, where he studied Design at Camberwell College of Arts (now part of the University of the Arts London).[1] Supported by a Crafts Council Grant, and Sainsbury's scholarship, he set up a showroom at Oxo Tower Wharf on London's South Bank in 1998[1], where he still works. [2] Sperlein produces signature collections of fine bone china (White Sculptural, Red Berry and Black Berry, some of which are part of the British Council collections.[1]
He also works as a design consultant for a variety of international brands. In his early career, he developed a collection of tableware for Thomas Goode called Grandiflora and a home accessory collection for fashion store Brown's.[3] Sperlein also created a collection of tableware for historic porcelain manufactory Nymphenburg,[4] (established in 1747).
Sperlein has also worked for historic porcelain brand Lladró, creating a range of porcelain jewellery, lighting and home accessories from element of their figurines.[5] The large-scale Magic Forest chandelier was exhibited as part of a solo show at the England and Co. contemporary art gallery in 2008[6] along with a series of wood mirrors and a lit mirror called Eclipse, made from the material Corian.
Along with a range of other fashion and homeware designers, he participated in the Swarovski Crystal Wedding Project, creating table decorations inspired by the institution of marriage.[7]
Sperlein's most recent collection was a collaboration with restaurateur Alan Yau, for the new brand Yauatcha Atelier [8]. These tea accessories were shown at the Super Squat exhibition at Brunswick House (former home of the Duke of Brunswick) during the London Design Festival 2009.[9] He also revealed his first foray into the world of furniture design at the Tent London design show in 2009, with the launch of the Contour table and chair.[10]
