The Squigglers is a Singaporean rock band, formed in July 27th 2023. The band is a duo made up of lead guitarist James Lee and rhythm guitarist Emre Tan, as well as drums and bass by their Novakey MK III and free plugins. Sometimes their friend Jerrick hops on a track.
The Squigglers managed put out their first album by christmas of 2023, recorded and produced all in James' bedroom with an M-audio M-track SOLO and a Audio Technica AT 20-20 from their local music store. In fact, all their singles and albums in 2024 were recorded the same way.
In mid 2024, their most popular song "Social Butterfail" breached the 1 thousand listens milestone on spotify, which the members were understandably gassed about. One of their songs, "Where Did You Go?" garnered almost 2 thousand views on youtube by pure luck, earning them a total of 2 dollars in total revenue (aft taxes). Their Single "brocken 2" was well recieved by fans and the band loves the song to death. That's all that really matters anyway right?
"The Squigwakening" (2023) was their debut album. They managed to get it out by christmas that year and it included songs about light hearted and fun topics. its an album the members hold dear to their hearts as it was experimental and fun all the way around. By experimental, I mean learning for to use the DAW and how plug ins worked...
History
editFormation (2023)
editThe two were friends from Secondary school. Having kept in touch on social media, they caught wind that both of them had picked up the guitar. As two amateurs, there wouldnt be much of a skill falloff so joining together would only be beneficial and without problem. Before they met for the first time at James' house on the 27th of July, they tried making a song over text, boucing around amateurish riffs and ideas, going absolutely nowhere. When they finally met up, they came up with the band name on the spot and dropped their first single, "Minimum Wage (Fuck St4rbucks)". The song topic came from Emre's part time job he was working at at the time. The single was mixed (not mastered, we didnt know what that was) on a 3 month trial of Ableton and sent out to streaming platforms on a free distribution site named Magroove.
Over the next few months, the two met up to record new songs, aiming for ten songs for their first album by the end of the year. The album only ended up with 8 after we realised that song covers required licenses. The EP, "The Squigwakening" 's most notable songs were "Social Butterfail", "Where Did You Go" and "Minimum Wage (Fuck St4rbucks)". In the attempt to find the 'Squiggler Sound', the band covered different subgenres of rock, including punk rock and alt rock, hoping to inject their own creativity in the song structures, topics and unclouded decision making.
Their friend Jerrick hopped on two tracks, "Corporate Slave" and "Social Butterfail". He was James and Emre's secondary school friend too and he had a great voice. He was sort of dragged into it so they dont really bug him anymore after he showed disinterest afterwards.
2024
editIt was difficult to find time to meet up due to school and stuff so its taking us a year to do what we did in 4 months last year. We moved from the free Magroove to Distrokid too because Magroove was not sending our song out for weeks.
Songs are getting better mixed and structured.
Style and influences
editBefore the band had came to be, the two listened to music like normal people; Emre listened to whatever types of rock and metal there were to consume while James only listened to Jpop, Jrock and Anime music. When they got together, Emre shared different songs and introduced James to other genres and types of guitar-driven music. Their first songs were shots at grunge and metal as they tried to focus on making iconic riffs and not so much on quality of singing or difficulty of said riffs. Later on, they would focus abit more on experimental song structures and guitar layerings too. The band tried some piano in there as well as synth sounds in tracks like "Corporate Slave" and "Outta This Cage". We hate Outta This Cage though, dont talk about it.
The first album was influenced heavily by bands like Lovejoy, Good kid, Bowling For Soup and Yorushika. Songs that just simply had chord strummings as rhythm and simple leads on top was easy to mix and understand. "Social Butterfail" referenced Lovejoy songs like Perfume or Call Me What You Like, a Simple lead over a chord progression. The simple bass could easily be mapped on a midi plug in and so were the drums. Having no way of recording drums, the band had to settle with simple drum patterns, sometimes with a programmed drum fill they downloaded online. "Where did you go" referenced, unironically, Punk Rock 101 by Bowling for Soup. Literally the blueprint.
So far, the 'Squiggler Style' was clear - Squeeze a guitar solo somewhere in EVERY song.
