- Carlo Allegri was born in Milan, Italy, in 1862 and he was an Italian engineer. His family business was a famous bridge construction company.
Early life
edit- In 1889, he left the university and went to Thailand to work for Grassi Brothers,[1] which was the foreign construction company in Siam. After that, the Thai government hired Allegri to help them build the palaces and other structures. Therefore, he was the first foreign engineer that joined the Thailand construction. Then in 1893, he became the chief engineer of the Ministry of Public Works Department and hired 35 Italian staff members.[2]
Career
edit- The government assigned him to modify the palace, during the construction he had a lot of failures, but he always found a way to solve the construction issues. For example, he used brick to build the foundation of a building however, it did not work. Then Allegri started to observe the material that makes the foundation stronger. Moreover, his partner had knowledge about constructing bridge because he graduated from the university that teaches about the structure of the bridge, but Allegri had not graduated from the university. Somehow, he learned some engineer knowledge and experience from his family business. His family was known for construction of the bridge in Italy and the Thai government knew that Allegri and his partner were able to construct the bridge. This is why they could build many bridges in Thailand. In 1905, he and his partner wanted to build a bridge that was made from iron. In 1907, he and his friends had designed Villa Norasingh that had a feeling of “Venice of the East” and they built a huge palace for [Rama V] called The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.[3] Allegri built many buildings and structures and contributed to buildings such as, Fa Li La Bridge (1905), Red cross hospital (1900), The Bangkok Police Museum (1903-1905), and Pi Pop Li La Bridge (1904).[4]
Personal life
edit- After they completed the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, Allegri retired and returned back to his home country. After many years of working in Thailand, he became more popular in the architectural fields and he also improved many important places in Thailand. So, he played a big role in Thailand during the time of King Rama V’s renovation of Siam (Thailand). In 1938, he died in Italy at the age of 76.
