The main difference between the Sovereign City of Vurmond and a real country is whether other countries in the world agree it is real.

History

Pablo Picasso once said, what you imagine is real. It was my dream to be in the land of the great Pharaohs, the mighty kingdom of Ancient Egypt. Its grand monuments, treasures and fascinating stories opened the threshold of my imagination to dream for me to be ranked among the great leaders of the glorious kingdom.

As a young boy, I used to bury treasure chests filled with coins at our backyard, and as soon as the treasures were secured, I would create treasure maps with codes and symbols that only me could decipher. It was my wish to go back in time and see how it was like to be in ancient time especially during the time of ancient Egypt. I wished I could find a way to go to where I always wanted to be. After some years of dreaming and wishing, I found a way to be in a place where I had always wanted to be. I decided to create my own kingdom where I could be free and amass wealth, a place where I had always wanted to live.

The Sovereign City of Vurmond was conceived in 2000. Vurmond is a German word for Keepers. The German word was used purely as a symbol of the international dimension of the Sovereignty, and Vurmond or Keeper was chosen both as a name and purpose as a testimony that the Sovereign and its citizens are custodians of the goods of the earth. Over the years, the sovereign continued to grow through the inspiration I received from my studies and personal experiences as its supreme leader.

My fascination about the creation of my own kingdom was affirmed when I discovered the western monarchies from the books I borrowed from our school principal’s office in Carolina Elementary School. I became a regular borrower of books from the office, and soon I was granted unlimited access to the books by the school principal himself, Sir. Romeo C. Cedro.

As soon as I had the necessary information how a kingdom should function and be governed, I formed a formal sovereign entity that I considered my own kingdom. On the 22 February 2000, a Sovereign City was born in Brgy. Carolina Can-avid, Eastern Samar, Philippines.

My fascination of history made me concentrate on creating the Sovereign’s National Library and National Museum. I started my intensive collection of stamps, coins, bank notes, books, antiques, colored stones, and etc. All my money was channeled to the sovereign for the running of the government and to fund its projects.

Because of the massive projects, and because of the intensive attention and time I poured into the management of the sovereign, my father became indignant. Missing items from the library and museum were soon recorded. Luckily the lost items were later recovered laying in the grassland by our house. But it did not stop there: my father demanded that I should stop what I was doing and focus more on our shop’s work. I asserted my independence and defied his orders. As a result, the sovereign was expelled from its territory, with its priced national treasures from the museum and library scattered outside the house.

The Sovereign continued to exist as de facto state. All its activities and projects were delicately carried out underground with much success. The Sovereign continued to grow especially when I had unlimited access to the encyclopedias of Can-avid National High School (CNHS) because of my friendship with the Librarian, Archie Oriondo and the school principal, Ma’am Helen Rodriquez.

The first sovereign guidelines were drafted in 2005. In 2007, a new constitution was drafted inspired by the constitution of Switzerland. It was later expounded by Dr. Nelly O. Robin, Phd., then administrator of Eastern Samar State University – Can-avid Campus, when I was in the university and a member of the Supreme Student Council. During this time a set of original pictographs was created for the sovereign to have its own language. Unfortunately, all the available copies of the Vurman alphabets were lost.

The constitution went into various revisions as my concept and vision of the sovereignty continued to develop. The university librarian, Ma’am Adelwise N. Bianes, was also instrumental to the growth of the sovereign because she gave me access to the “exclusive” books in the library. A new pen-drawn sovereign was soon added into the documents. The sovereign is proud to house one of the copies of the “message in the bottle” thrown into Pacific Ocean as its oldest existing logo dated 2008. I am still hoping and waiting that some of the messages in the bottle thrown into the Pacific will be found and forwarded to me.

A pen drawn early design of the Sovereign logo:

It was not to my knowledge that there were other existing micronations around the world. In fact, I did not even realize that the sovereign I created was actually considered a micronation. As a sovereign entity, it never was my desire to be affirmed or recognized by others. It was enough that I was free and lived in the kingdom that I dreamed of.

I joined the seminary of the Society of African Missions in the Philippines in 2011. The seminary accorded me with an opportunity to nurture my dreams and expand the sovereign. I continued to expand my knowledge about the affairs of a nation and started to update the logo using the community computer and printer. All printed documents, however, got lost when I embraced minimalism.

My studies led me to the Knights Templars. The warrior monks revolutionized my concept of the sovereign and gave it a concrete sense of direction. Just as the Templars were protectors of Christians and the Holy Land, my reflection on my personal journey made me realize that, indeed, we are all keepers of this world. Therefore, the sovereign most focus on being good keepers of the good entrusted to humanity. Thus, the name Vurmond, which is a German word for Keepers, had been adopted as its official sovereign name.

To capture the spirit of the sovereign through an image, Griffin was chosen as the sovereign symbol with yellow and black as its official colors. The color yellow symbolizes the royalty and black symbolizes secrecy and autonomy of the sovereign.
