Young World Development was created in 1968 as the youth arm of the American Freedom From Hunger Foundation (AFFHF), the American affiliate of the Food Agricultural Organization. The goal of the AFFHF was to reduce hunger across the world. Reaching out to youth through YWD encouraged a growing awareness of food security issues in the United States and other countries. YWD sponsored Walks for Development in communities across the nation to raise funds for programs aimed at reducing hunger, both in the U.S. and abroad.
