Although James started his career in the 1980s as a DJ during his teenage years, he would not release any of his music until 1991, when he debuted with the Analogue Bubblebath EP. Following the success of the record, he signed to R&S Records and released Selected Ambient Works 85–92, his debut album, in 1992. James later left the label due to joining Warp Records and management of his record label, Rephlex Records.
