Romeo is Bleeding is an upcoming documentary film by Jason Zeldes as his directorial debut. The film is currently in post-production and has a slated release date of 2015. The documentary centers upon the creative writing group RAW Talent (Richmond Artists with Talent).[1] Zeldes chose to focus on RAW Talent after hearing of Clark's play and because it would allow him to collaborate with his cousin Molly Raynor, who co-founded RAW Talent.[1]
Background
editFunding for the film was provided partially through the San Francisco Film Society's Documentary Film Fund and a successful Kickstarter campaign.[2][3] Romeo is Bleeding was also selected as one of the ten films chosen to become part of the 2014 Independent Filmmaker Labs run through the Independent Filmmaker Project,[4] and as a feature-length documentary in post-production, received $22,500 in 2014 as one three films chosen to receive funding through the San Francisco Film Society's Documentary Film Fund awards.[5]
Synopsis
editThe documentary follows RAW Talent and specifically Donte Clark, a 23 year old member that uses poetry as a positive outlet against the peer pressure and violence he sees on a daily basis in northern Richmond, California. Over the past five years he has risen to become the co-director of RAW Talent, but is saddened to discover that the group will soon lose its budget and will be shut down. He decides that he will try to rescue the group by writing and starring in an autobiographical spoken word adaptation of Romeo and Juliet entitled Te's Harmony.[6]
