User page for Mako001. This account was previously known as The Alternate Mako, but I have usurped an old account that I created a few years ago and was never able to access.

I also have a few alternate accounts:

  • Mako's Bot, which is an account which would be used for any future bot tasks, so shouldn't be making any edits until further notice (and after approval, obviously).
  • Mako001-unconfirmed, used for testing stuff as an unconfirmed user.
  • Mako002, for possible AWB use (not to be confused with this)

If you want to refer to me using less than seven characters, "Mako" will usually be fairly unambiguous.

Most of my work isn't on content creation, but I have written a couple of articles. I have also accidentally rewritten or expanded a few others, typically after encountering them whilst doing something else.

The fundamental principles of Wikipedia may be summarized in five "pillars":

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia

Wikipedia combines many features of general and specialized encyclopedias, almanacs, and gazetteers. Wikipedia is not a soapbox, an advertising platform, a social network, a vanity press, an experiment in anarchy or democracy, an indiscriminate collection of information, nor a web directory. It is not a dictionary, a newspaper, nor a collection of source documents, although some of its fellow Wikimedia projects are.

Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view

We strive for articles with an impartial tone that document and explain major points of view, giving due weight for their prominence. We avoid advocacy, and we characterize information and issues rather than debate them. In some areas there may be just one well-recognized point of view; in others we describe multiple points of view, presenting each accurately and in context rather than as "the truth" or "the best view". All articles must strive for verifiable accuracy with citations based on reliable sources, especially when the topic is controversial or is about a living person. Editors' personal experiences, interpretations, or opinions do not belong on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute

All editors freely license their work to the public, and no editor owns an article – any contributions can and may be mercilessly edited and redistributed. Respect copyright laws and never plagiarize from any sources. Borrowing non-free media is sometimes allowed as fair use, but editors should strive to find free alternatives first.

Wikipedia's editors should treat each other with respect and civility

Respect your fellow Wikipedians, even when you disagree. Apply Wikipedia etiquette, and do not engage in personal attacks or edit wars. Seek consensus, and never disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. Act in good faith, and assume good faith on the part of others. Be open and welcoming to newcomers. Should conflicts arise, discuss them calmly on the appropriate talk pages, follow dispute resolution procedures, and consider that there are 6,906,755 other articles on the English Wikipedia to improve and discuss.

Wikipedia has no firm rules

Wikipedia has policies and guidelines, but they are not carved in stone; their content and interpretation can evolve over time. The principles and spirit matter more than literal wording, and sometimes improving Wikipedia requires making exceptions. Be bold, but not reckless, in updating articles. And do not agonize over making mistakes: they can be corrected easily because (almost) every past version of each article is saved.

Significant wiki-squirrel accidents

edit

Other smaller wiki-squirrel accidents have also ocurred from time to time.

Please do not request a wiki-squirrel accident, or suggest one, as they are only accidental.

Citing stuff available on the National Library of Australia

edit

The National Library of Australia is (as far as I have ever found) virtually the only site of its kind which provides Wikipedia citations, all the others will give you BibTex, APA, and all that, but NLA give you a formatted, CS2 style, wikitext citation, whether it be on trove.nla.gov.au (old newspapers and magazines etc.), or (apparently) anywhere on nla.gov.au. They seem to know that editing Wikipedia is relatively popular in Australia.

AFL, a lighthearted jibe

edit

Australian Rules football is a strange game played by some inhabitants of Australia, and watched and followed by many more. It is a bizarre game and generally played through the middle of winter (June to August in the Southern Hemisphere). Despite only having two teams, WA is disproportionately daft about "Footy". At around the end of winter and early spring, people "all over the country" (I.e. Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, a bit of Queensland, and Western Australia) go nuts 'cos Grand Final weekend is coming. This excitement is expressed in several ways, such as drinking way too much beer, perhaps having a bit of a punch-up, swearing a lot, wearing your favourite team's colours, making crude jokes about the other teams (and particularly the one your favourite team will be facing next) and sometimes vandalising player's Wikipedia pages. Why this last one makes any sense is beyond me. So, next time you happen to be a bit tipsy and decide to edit Wikipedia (a really, really bad decision), feel free to edit here, instead of vandalising your least favourite player's Wikipedia page.

The Knave

edit

A two speaker poem about WP:AGF and WP:BITE.

For my own benefit more than any other.

Poem
Ahoy! The knave is again at work,
He scurrieth through the pages,
He removeth and he addeth,
Wreaking havoc in his wake!

But wait, what of this knave,
Is unlike that of a useful peasant?
For useful peasants also add,
And remove, all in good measure.

Nay! His work is a different sort,
Nought of any value doth he add,
And he careth not what the value
Of what he removeth may be!

How dost thou surely know this?
Hast the knave told thee thus,
"I am come to destroy, to ruin"?
Or dost thou just assume it be so?

Nay! All for which he ever careth,
Is for his childish amusement,
As swiftly as his mess is undone
He remaketh it, fourfold worse!

But no! There is another side
For a knave is merely one
Who has not yet learned!
He must be taught, and well!

Nay! Taught with the rod,
Blows, harshness must he feel
His skull must be surely
As thick as a castle wall.

Ay! I'd say a greater knave,
Speaketh to me now. For truly,
Nothing could be e'er more foolish,
Than to withhold grace where due.

My edit count...

edit

...isn't a particularly worthwhile measure of my usefulness. Most took little effort on my part. So far, I haven't written a single Good or Featured article, and that probably won't change, since I don't really have the patience/focus to stick at writing an article for that long. Many editors with only a few hundred edits have contributed much more than I have.

WP:ROPE in action

edit

Demonstrated marvellously at User talk:Froggeee562.

[That Wikipedia criticism site] is (probably) not run by Voldemort, but the Dark Lord and [that site] have got some things in common. When editing here, you may notice that users have an aversion towards mentioning [that site] by name, as though it will attract some sort of evil attention. And they aren't entirely wrong. Like Voldemort, users of [that site] can tell when you say [the site's name] due to the magical forces of search engines. By simply searching [the site's name] in Google, and limiting the results to Wikipedia, or using Wikipedia's own search engine, you can find any mention of [that site] and enjoy reading what is being said about [that site]. Whether this is something to be afraid of is another thing entirely, and whilst the wizarding world sure should've been afraid of saying Voldemort's name, it isn't too clear if Wikipedians should be afraid of saying Wikipediocracy's name. Oh crap, I said it!

(BTW, if any Wikipediocracy users see this, I hope you can have good laugh at our expense)

Oh, I hadn't kept an eye on that thread, too busy dealing with a rather er, difficult case... Thanks very much! Mako001 (C)  (T) (The Alternate Mako) 01:29, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
No worries, I was just afraid that my answer wasn't a clear-enough "yes" and/or you didn't want to copy the original one for privacy reasons. So here's a shiny new one! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 03:11, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Eumillipes

edit

On 2 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Eumillipes, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that with 1,000 or more legs, Eumillipes persephone (example pictured) is the first known "true" millipede? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Eumillipes. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Eumillipes), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:02, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

  Hook update
Your hook reached 8,410 views (700.8 per hour), making it one of the most viewed hooks of January 2022 – nice work!

I didn't know I could give barnstars, but I want to show my appreciation for your having helped me out with the Kyushu dynasty theory and suggesting going about translating articles seen in higher regard on their native wikipedias. MaitreyaVaruna (talk) 06:28, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Further discussion
@MaitreyaVaruna: No worries, you may want to take a look at Wp:Translate and the list of pages at the end of that page, which may help answer any questions you might have about translation. If not let me know and I'll try to help out as best I can, or ask over at the WP: Teahouse Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 06:38, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

I also wanted to say I saw a ton of revisions being removed from this page due to harassment or something. That's unfortunate it's happening to you because you seem to be a very reasonable contributor. MaitreyaVaruna (talk) 07:02, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

I seem to have annoyed a long term abuser, who has since taken to dropping in every so often to post some delightful messages. I don't really mind too much, it'll take a lot more than calling me an "asswipe" or any other name, or throwing any insult (however many exclamation marks may follow it) to upset me! Thanks so much for the help with that editor on the Buffalo shooting article. I am still relatively new here and trying to help out with some recent changes work while also doing my editing. I was not sure if I could report the editor to AIV or not as yet, and having them come to my personal talk page like that was a first for me. Having an experienced editor step in with that support was helpful. Thanks. Also, what is that cabal template called? Thanks again, SC Such-change47 (talk) 11:36, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
P.S. and reply
PS - I initially posted this on your userpage by accident, got disorientated when I saw all the other barnstars there. Such-change47 (talk) 05:09, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Well, their editing before that had been troublesome, though not block-worthy, but they seemed to be out to put an undue weight to certian facts about the inventor of the Great Replacement theory. These were irrelevant for the articles lead section. After they persisted in adding it after being given the level 4 warning, then they could be reported. Given their edit summaries and such, they were definitely not intending to help build an encyclopedia. Strictly speaking, it wasn't vandalism, but if an editor is acting like they are clearly not here to build an encyclopedia, that is grounds to take them to AIV, especially when it needs urgent intervention to prevent further disruption.
The cabal template is found here. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 05:22, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

I was taught that to respond to a compliment with "oh it's not that good" degrades the original compliment, so I didn't say any more at the time. However, I don't think edit count is particularly important. Editors with fewer edits than me have made dozens of Featured and Good Articles, and most of my edits have been made with semi-automated tools. But, still, I'm glad that they thought it was of value. I wasn't impressed at the way that they were just all assuming that the articles were "paid journalism", when I don't think that any of them have even got any idea of what Nigerian journalism normally looks like, and were expecting it to conform to their own European/Western standards. As one participant said "were you expecting something from the New York Times?" Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 09:36, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks again. I really appreciate. It’s just that people tend to always follow the bandwagon here so I really appreciate you sticking up for me. Africa is already so underrepresented here and pulling down the few articles we managed to garner is unwarranted. I got so fed up with the whole scenario, I just took some days off the platform because of it and By the time I came back, voting had already been done on the pages. You’re a real one.
