Edith Covensky is a hebrew poet living in the United States. She was born in Bucharest, Romania, grew up in Haifa, Israel, and presently resides in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Edith's work has been published in Hebrew; Hebrew-English; Hebrew-Arabic-English; and Romanian. Growing up in Haifa, she went to "Maalot Ha'neveem" ("Steps of the Prophets") elementary school, and continued high school at "Kol-Israel Haverim" ("Alliance"), where she focused on Hebrew and French literature. After serving in the IDF (1963-1965), and upon her military discharge, she traveled to the United States.
Edith's parents, Gizy (Hebrew: Tova) Heinish Bizaoui, and Maurice (Hebrew: Moshe) Josephson Bizaoui are mentioned in memoriam. Covensky is married to, Attorney, Harvey Covensky and has two children, Jeffrey (Attorney/Screenwriter), and Laurice (Attorney). Her grandchildren, Ainsley and Aden live in San-Diego, California.
Professional Career
editSince 1987 Covensky has been teaching Hebrew and Israeli Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
She is a member of the Hebrew Writers Association in Tel Aviv, Israel; editor of Pseifas, an Israeli literary Journal dedicated to classical and Hebrew poetry; and a member of the Association of Alexander Dumas the Father, located in Paris, France, whom she studied for many years.
Covensky started writing Hebrew poetry in 1981, publishing her first poem "Small Blessings" (Hebrew: "Al Hassadim Ktanim") in Bitzaron, a distinguished literary journal issued by New York University (1982). She has published to date 32 poetry books. Her numerous individual poems have been published in Israel and in the United States. Her poetry has been the subject of a volume entitled: under a Silky Sky: The Symbolist Poetry of Edith Covensky, written by eminent scholar and literary critic, Professor Yair Mazor (Maven Mark Books, 2015). Noted French Professor Michael Giordano, prefaced her poetry in the volume, entitled: In the Beginning (Hebrew: Breeah; French: Genese), Gvanim, Tel-Aviv, 2017. Covensky's poetry has been recorded in both Hebrew and English. Her poem, "Niggun" from the book, entitled: Life as Fiction, has been set to music by acclaimed Israeli singer and composer, Chani Dinur.
