Sailing experience

edit

Cecilia Carreri began sailing when she was 14 on a Flying Junior and, after taking two courses at the famous Italian sailing academy Centro Velico Caprera, she purchased her first boat, a 470 named Superbuba, an Olympic class dinghy with which she sailed extensively in Sardinia and in the Adriatic Sea. Her passion and sailing expertise grew, leading her to purchase a racing boat, a Mumm 36, named Mummut, with which Cecilia circumnavigated the Italian island of Elba (single-handed), Corsica (double-handed) and Italy (double-handed), sailing through Greece. To achieve her dream, she went to Dunkerque, France where the “Mare Verticale” project began, an Open 60 racing yacht designed by architects Finot-Conq.

The Open 60 is a 60 foot-long monohull oceanic racing yacht; it’s 18 feet wide, it has a 15-foot draft, a 90 foot mast and weighs 8.5 tonnes. The Open 60 is an IMOCA class racing yacht..

The yacht was previously named Somewhere and Active Wear skippered by Marc Thiercelin, and Arcelor-Dunkerque  skippered by Joé Seteen. Cecilia Carreri named the Open 60 Mare Verticale and participated in the Rolex Fastnet Race between England and Ireland (with crew) and in one of the most challenging races in the world, the Transat Jacques Vabre (double-handed) from Le Havre (France) to Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) in 17 days. Shortly after arriving in Salvador, she crossed the ocean again bringing the boat back to Dunkerque in 22 days. Upon finishing the race, she was welcomed and awarded by the honorary Italian consul Giovanni Pisanu as the sole Italian to complete the race, after the trimaran skippered by Giovanni Soldini and Vittorio Malingri capsized during the race. Cecilia received various prices and distinctions and much attention from both the French and Italian press.  She was also awarded the Vendée Globe in 2016.
