Jonathan, son of the legendary composer and co-founder of Indo Jazz Fusions, the late John Mayer, and violinist Gillian Mayer, started his musical training at the age of 5. His father taught him composition, his grandfather the violin, and he took piano lessons from James Methuen-Campbell, the author and music critic. By the age of 16, Jonathan found the instrument that would be his life, the sitar. He started learning from Clem Alford (the first ever European sitar player) and later from Pandit Subroto Roychowdhury of Senia Gharana and Wajahat Khan (direct descendent of Mia Tansen the Great Musician, one of the nine jewels in Moghul Court of Emperor Akbar). Jonathan gained a B.Mus (Hons) at the Birmingham Conservatoire where he studied both sitar and composition. His career so far has seen him play with artists such as Dave Stewart, The Smith String Quartet, The Bingham String Quartet, Kumar Bose, Shiv Shankar Ray, Ashok Dutta, Erich Gruenburg, Rohan De Sarem,The Dub Pistols, John Wilson, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Sarah Brightman, I Musici Fiamminghi Orchestra,and Sir Paul McCartney. He has also recorded a solo album for Cooking Vinyl Records. As a composer, his orchestral works have been performed at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham. He has written for Erich Gruenburg, Joji Hattori, his father’s band Indo-Jazz Fusions and for many library music companies. His playing and compositions can be heard on two Nimbus CD’s and two on FMR. Jonathan can also be heard on Sarah Brightmans' Eden and Kevin Spaceys' Beyond the sea. He has toured extensively with Indo-Jazz Fusions in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the UK. As a soloist Jonathan has performed all over the world including France, United Arab Emirates, Australia, America, and two acclaimed tours in India along with performances for the BBC, which were both warmly praised by the press.
