Mazlum Özkan
Mazlum Özkan (born 1994) is a Turkish academic specializing in sociology and international relations. He is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. His research centers on the dynamics of social movements, with a particular emphasis on understanding why Iranian social movements fail or struggle to sustain their success. His broader academic interests include social movements, Middle East politics, and the influence of great powers.
Early Life and Education
Mazlum Özkan was born in Altınyurt, a village near Gaziantep, Turkey. He began his education at the local elementary school and later attended Yeşildere Middle School through a transportation program due to the absence of a middle school in his village. He completed his secondary education at Gaziantep High School. Özkan pursued higher education at Yalova University, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in International Relations in 2017, studying in English.
Following his undergraduate studies, Özkan was awarded a prestigious scholarship under Turkey’s 1416 Law (YLSY)[1], which enabled him to pursue advanced studies abroad. He enrolled in intensive Persian language courses at the Dehkhoda Lexicon Institute & International Center for Persian Studies in Iran, followed by a Master's degree in International Relations from Tehran University[2]. His master's thesis explored "Legal Cooperation in Criminal Matters between the Republic of Turkey and the Islamic Republic of Iran: The Impact of Political Considerations on the Implementation of Treaty Obligations of States."
Career
In June 2023, Özkan began his doctoral studies at the University of Groningen[3]in Netherlands, participating in both the SCOOP program[4] and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).[5]
Özkan’s PhD research focuses on understanding the failures and sustainability challenges of Iranian social movements, examining both internal dynamics and external influences, including the role of great powers in the region.
