EdgeWave, previously know as St. Bernard Software, is a San Diego-based cybersecurity company[1] specializing in web and email security. Their security solutions are used by businesses, governments and educational institutions to protect their networks from cybercrime, including malware and phishing, as well as prevent users from viewing sexual or other inappropriate content and discourage employees/students from browsing non-organizational appropriate websites. EdgeWave uses a combination of filtering categories, classification engines and rules designated by the individual customer's network policy.
History
editEdgeWave was founded in 1995 as St. Bernard Software, at the time best known for its OpenFileManager product[2][3], a software solution for backup packages that insured the protection of data in motion. The OpenFileManager product was eventually sold to EVault[4].
In 2000, EdgeWave acquired and released UpdateEXPERT[5][6], a patch management software that helped IT administrators keep their OS systems running smoothly. The UpdateEXPERT product was eventually sold to Shavlik[7]. During the same year, EdgeWave acquired Internet Products, creators of the iPrism Web Filter.
In July of 2006, EdgeWave completed a merger with Sand Hill IT Security Acquisition Corporation[8][9][10] and became a public company[11], trading under the ticker OTCBB: EWVE (formerly OTCBB: SBSW). Also in 2006, EdgeWave acquired Singlefin[12][13], a provider of hosted services for web, email and instant-messaging[14].
In 2010, EdgeWave acquired Red Condor[15], a privately held company that offered anti-spam appliances[16] and a hosted service that blocked e-mail spam, spyware, and viruses.
In 2012, EdgeWave Deregistered as a publicly traded company[17]. Shares of the company are completely private and no longer traded.
In 2014, EdgeWave raised $8 million in Series A funding[18][19]. The total was made from two seperate investments from TVC CapitalCite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).</ref>, a San Diego-based growth equity firm, and private equity and venture capital firm Northgate.
In 2015, EdgeWave recieved a MetroConnect Prize[20] of $10,000 to assist with developing international business opportunities. EdgeWave previously had an office in the UK[21], targeting the EMEA market[22][23].
Security Services
editWeb Security - EdgeWave's iPrism web service may be implemented as an appliance or appliance/cloud hybrid service operating at the transport layer as a transparent proxy, or at the application layer as a web proxy. In each installation, the effect is that it can inspect network traffic to or from the internet for a targeted group of people. EdgeWave's iPrism allows system administrators to block access to websites[24] and other protocols based on categories. These contain lists of sites that may be blocked at will, either at specified times or permanently. The process can be entirely automated but relies upon either preset policy templates or rule sets that are developed in house. In companies, this can prevent access to sites known to be infected with malicious content, it can prevent malicious programs from connecting to outside sites, and can limit the amount of bandwidth used by individual computers in a network. The knowledge that web access is controlled can cause employees to stop using Internet during work hours for personal or inappropriate uses[25], including watching sporting events. In educational institutions, this can prevent students from viewing inappropriate content, such as pornography, as well as blocking non productive sites like Facebook and Twitter[26]. The software also tracks individual internet usage to collect and report on any browsing behaviors that deviate from the standards set by the library, government or other employer, and its reports can be data drilled by category, URL, application, user, workstation, dates, and more.
Email Security - EdgeWave's ePrism email service may be implemented as a hosted SaaS cloud service or managed on-premises appliance. EdgeWave's ePrism uses a multi-layered approach to stopping spam[27], phishing and malicious emails without adversely affecting the flow of legitimate business-critical ones. The service protects both inbound, analyzing content for things like viruses and phishing attempts, and outbound email. Inbound and outbound traffic analysis searches for unusual behavior patterns and protects against network-based threats such as DoS and DHA. Additional options include Data Loss Prevention, Continuity and Encryption[28]. Data Loss Prevention, protects sensitive data and meet regulations such as HIPAA and GLBA. Continuity, enables continuous web-based email access to emails in the event of a planned or unplanned mail server outage. Encryption (handled via TLS Server-to-Server, Park and Pull or Push) secures sensitive emails that leave an organization.

editEdgeWave maintains R&D facilities in San Diego and Rohnert Park, CA. The EdgeWave research and development department includes content operations, security research, software development, quality assurance, and documentation.
