Reliable sources for horror films
editReliable sources for horror films that may be considered include those online sources that cater specifically to independent films and/or low-budget horror films, such as Fangoria, Film Threat, and Fearnet. Some of these may have started as fansites, but have grown and evolved over the years. Although not as wide-spread or renowned as large-circulation newspapers such as New York Times, they are accepted as WP:RS as long as they meet the reliable sources criteria set out in the guideline – there is no requirement that sources be of some arbitrary set size or circulation.
Reliable sources are credible published materials with a reliable publication process; their authors are generally regarded as trustworthy or authoritative in relation to the subject at hand. How reliable a source is depends on context. As a rule of thumb, the more people engaged in checking facts, analyzing legal issues, and scrutinizing the writing, the more reliable the publication. Sources should directly support the information as it is presented in an article and should be appropriate to the claims made; if an article topic has no reliable sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it. See Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard for queries about the reliability of particular sources.
"A topic is presumed to be notable if it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
In Wikipedia:Notability (films) "The following are attributes that generally indicate, when supported with reliable sources, that the required sources are likely to exist" is often mis-interpreted. These "attributes" are not mandatory. Rather, they are representative of attributes that give rise to a presumption of the existence of sources satisfying the GNG, thus encouraging a diligent search.
Wikipedia:Notability (films) quote | Explanation |
---|---|
"The film is widely distributed and has received full length reviews by two or more nationally known critics". | Is not a demand that only reviews by nationally known critics be considered... it is simply offered as one of the examples that suggest a diligent search, including the consideration of genre-specific reviewers who are respected and expert in their field. |
"Publication of at least two non-trivial articles, at least five years after the film's initial release" | Includes the consideration of reviews and critiques of subsequent DVD releases as long as they meet criteria for reliable sources and not trivial. |
"The film was deemed notable by a broad survey of film critics, academics, or movie professionals, when such a poll was conducted at least five years after the film's release" | Includes the consideration of genre-specific reviewers who are respected and expert in their field. |
"The film was given a commercial re-release, or screened in a festival, at least five years after initial release" | Includes the consideration of DVD release or re-release or screenings at genre-specific festivals and retrospectives. |
"The film was featured as part of a documentary, program, or retrospective on the history of cinema" | Includes the consideration of genre-specific retrospectives and screenings. |
"The film has received a major award for excellence in some aspect of filmmaking" | Includes the consideration of genre-specific awards at genre-specific festivals. Note: Wikipedia:Notability (films) lists some major awards, but specifically states that "standards have not yet been established to define a major award". So genre-specific awards, major for their genre, would qualify. |
Sources may exist that satisfy the WP:GNG and WP:N even if not among these listed attributes, as these attributes are not intended to be exclusionary... they are simply a guide to encourage a diligent search.
