George Broadhead is the long-standing secretary of the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT). A veteran gay activist, he co-founded the UK Gay Humanist Group in 1979, which was later enamed as the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA). For 25 years, as a GALHA committee member, Broadhead acted as its administrative secretary and principle spokesperson.
Awards
edit2002: Happy Rainbow Man Award from the Nordic Rainbow Humanists, "for his enthusiastic, courageous and years-long work for the human rights and dignity of lesbians and gays all over the world".[1]
2006: Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK National Secular Society (NSS) "for services to secularism and gay rights".[2]
In 2002, he received the annual Happy Rainbow Man award from Nordic Rainbow Humanists "for his enthusiastic, courageous and years-long work for the human rights and dignity of lesbians and gays all over the world".
In 2006 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK National Secular Society "for services to secularism and gay rights".
On his resignation in March 2007, Jim Herrick, GALHA’s Chair at the time, said: "George Broadhead has been a tower of strength to GALHA. He has undertaken the role of secretary in a voluntary capacity for a magnificent stint of 25 years. Not only has he covered the administration but also the promotion of the association and keeping in touch with members and other gay groups. His enthusiasm and friendliness have been invaluable to GALHA. It is fair to say that in difficult times it has been his determination and tenacity which have kept GALHA going."[3]
GALHA committee member Terry Sanderson, now president of the UK National Secular Society, said: "George’s achievement is quite magnificent. He has steered GALHA through its highs and lows and been a personal favourite with the members who have always enjoyed his bon vivant personality. But as well as that, he has provided a steady voice against the encroachment and growth of religious homophobia. GALHA and the gay community at large has much to thank George for.""[4]
UK Gay & Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) in 1979. He was one of its committee members, administrative secretary and principle spokesperson for some 25 years. He also edited its journal for 10 years. He had previously been involved with the UK Campaign for Homosexual Equality, at one time the UK’s principle gay rights organisation, and helped found and run one of its local groups.
Broadhead is currently a trustee and secretary of the UK gay Humanist charity the Pink Triangle Trust which was set up in 1992 to advance the education of the public, and particularly of lesbians and gay men, in the principles and practice of Humanism, and to advance the education of the public, and particularly of Humanists, about all aspects of homosexuality.
