Verifiability and sources tutorial - notes:
edit[[1]] - unreferenced article on football. Consists of a table listing competition winners for that season, and a number of tables containing statistics for each of the Divisions.
Unreferenced statistics such as these are problematical because:
- It is impossible for a user to check that these are the statistics they say they are (they could be from the following season, for example).
- It is impossible to check whether these statistics have been transcribed correctly (or whether they were correct in the original source).
- It is impossible to check whether the statistics come from a reliable source/sources.
What would be a reliable source?
- Official data from the FA/Football League? (ie: the history pages of their official websites)
- Data in books published by the above?
- Contemporary (national) newspaper reports (quality papers)?
- Contemporary books on the subject?
