Deletionist dick is the term given to a special type of dick editor who continually skirts Wikipedia's guidelines, but can't be banned without extreme difficulty for a number of reasons. This page will help you identify if someone is a Deletionist Dick.
The encounter
editPotential Dick
editAn editor encounters a series of articles about which he has no knowledge or expertise, but believes, after a half-assed google, that the content is crap and must be deleted. He cannot breath properly, nor actually bother to research the subject, whilst the articles exist.
- The content at issue is related to something of which they are ignornant. It could be internet related, at long as it about a part of the internet different than what the dick loves and defends.
- The editor makes very few substantial contributions to wikipedia.
- The editor tries to stealthily delete articles by turning them into redirects.
- The editor puts notability tags on articles willy-nilly.
- The editor applies rules without even understanding how they work, thus subverting their purpose to achieve article deletion.
- The editor won't let go.
During AFD
editThe editor decides to nominate the article or series of articles without any research into the content or whether the article can be improved. If a Deletionist Dick decides to nominate an article for deletion, the following may occur:
- Dick can't get anyone to agree with him.
- Dick then assumes everyone else disagreeing with him is infected with a conflict of interest or has been canvassed.
- Dick ignores constructive conversation and changes subjects when prior points are answered.
- Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions will be common from the dick.
- Even when a few established users chime in, the dick still won't realize they are being a dick.
An editor cannot cannot be identified as a Deletionist Dick until it has been nominated for deletion, and that has run its course.
After the AFD
edit- The dick will likely seek a deletion review, where they will lose.
- The dick may renominate an article for a new AfD a few days after losing the first one.
- The dick will wikistalk those who were in favor of keeping the article and who improved the article, and will harrass them. This can happen during and after the AFD.
- The dick will continually harass the opposing editors; the amount of harrassment will be more if they have absolutely no suppport.
Summary
editIn summary, you will find it very hard to deal with a Deletionist Dick if:
- Nobody cares about deleting the article except the dick, so ocassionally a few people will chime in and suggest that the dick not be a dick, but they don't listen, of course.
- The dick never realizes that the reason he has no support is because no one else agrees with him. Even if there was any merit to the dick's original arguments, these get lost due to his behavior, and his inability to change his/her opinion based on improvements to articles.
- The size of the flood, and the severity of the uncivilness from the Deletionist Dick must not reach the breaking point where it's obvious. Surface appeal to rules and the like, without responding to editors who essentially call the dick a dick is key. But it takes a huge amount of dickishness for a closing admin and other users to notice, because face it, nobody likes dealing with dicks.
