Ugly is what the fearful call the new. This being the case, let's not shrink from the occasional act of reasoned terror. The main tyranny in the world is the conspiracy to save us from every unpredictability. Genetic screening allows us to abort the fetus that hasn't the brainpower for Harvard or the reflexes for a goalie. The shopping mall makes sure all our choices are equivalevent, everywhere. Perestroika guarantees a Pepsi for everyone. Let architecture rise in the defense of unreasonable fantasy: too much Pepsi or none! Architects should be wild for sex, coupling with whom or whatever's willing, climaxing like crazy. To be a great architect is to love all your kids, especially for their differences. Let us make grotesque, Rabelaisian, crazy architecture. As Bakhtin reminds us, this is the mode of regeneration and utopia, a gay parody of the official styles of reason. I like an architecture that thumbs its nose.
