Between 1969 and 1972, I studied Chemical Physics at the University of Sussex. My only exposure to computers was writing a program, using a Teletype equipped with a paper tape punch, to output the words "Hello world".

For the next few years, I worked in a vegetarian cafe, in two British secondary schools (teaching maths and science) and in two housing associations (looking after tenants).

Then, between 1976 and 1978, I studied Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London. My favourite computer language was Algol-68.
