  1. ^ For the purpose of this list, an aircraft is a manned balloon, aircraft, or helicopter. The list also covers unmanned drones lost in action. It does not cover unmanned missiles such as the WWII V-1 and V-2. Aircraft lost in accidents on a combat mission are included. For other military aircraft losses see List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft. Civil aircraft downed by enemy action are not within the scope of this list. Those that have articles on Wikipedia are linked from the List of accidents and incidents involving commercial aircraft.
