Bernhard Hirmer (born 6 December 1967) is a German former professional footballer who was last employed as the goalkeeping coach at The New Saints.
Career
editHirmer began his professional career at FC Bayern Munich, but did not make an appearance for the first team, instead playing six matches for the reserve side, FC Bayern Munich II. He left the club in 1996 to join Dynamo Dresden, but after only being named on the substitutes' bench for several games, moved on once more the following year to Borussia Fulda.
At Borussia Fulda, Hirmer made his first senior appearances in the league, playing four matches in the Regionalliga West-Sudwest, but transferred to FC 08 Homburg in 1998. He stayed there for one season, playing sixteen times, before another short stint at KFC Uerdingen 05.
In 2000, Hirmer moved to England for the first time, signing for Bristol Rovers, but did not make an appearance, and retired at the end of the season to focus on a coaching career.
His career as a coach took in stints at 1. FC Vöcklabruck and Rheindorf Altach before he joined Stockport County of the Football Conference in 2011. An injury crisis at Stockport forced Hirmer to register himself as a player in February 2012, and he made his debut in English football against Southport on 17 March, following regular goalkeeper Ian Ormson's red card. Hirmer played the final eighteen minutes, conceding the fourth and fifth goals in a 0–5 defeat.[1] Aged 44, he became the oldest player in England's top five divisions during the 2011/2012 season.
Hirmer left Stockport in the summer of 2012, joining Rochdale as their goalkeeping coach, before taking up the same role at The New Saints of the Welsh Premier League the next year.
