Article layout

edit

There are several topics covered by WikiProject Mining whose article benefit from a consistent approach to layout. The following is a proposal for how to lay out articles on individual mines:

Mines

edit

The following list reflects the general order that an article on a specific mine should follow. All sections except lead and references are optional.

  • The lead:
    • First sentence will generally contain the name(s), the commodity type of mine (e.g. coal mine or molybdenum mine, and geographic location.
    • Other sentences in lead should include:
      • anything that makes the mine particularly notable (e.g. "deepest mine in Asia", "70% of copper production for Country X", site of a major accident)
      • when mining began and ended
      • ownership
      • anything else to summarize the contents of the article or provide an overview of the subject
  • TOC (Table of Contents: automatically generated)
  • Etymology: if multiple explanations or detailed enough that it warrants its own section, otherwise, include where relevant under history.
    • Omit an etymology when the name is merely descriptive, e.g. McArthur River uranium mine is clearly a mine on the McArthur River
      • However, do not omit one when the seemingly-descriptive name it is named after another mine.
  • Geology: if enough information for it to stand on its own; otherwise, a short bit under lead or history
  • History: about the discovery of the deposit, development, growth, its impact on the community, state/province, nation, or history more broadly, any noteworthy accidents, etc.
  • In culture: if the mine is featured prominently in culture, folklore, art, a film, etc. This should not be an indiscriminate list of appearances, but should supplement the text.
  • References
  • External links: see WP:EXTERNAL for full guidelines.
    • Commons Category links go under "External links" if the section already exists, otherwise, it should be added as a box under references)
