Newb here-just trying to set things up so I can contribute recordings to the SpokenWiki Project. Currently trying to upload my recording of Treaty of Devol--but it's taking forever.
OK-looking at the Archive for the sound recording guide revealed that there is an 8Meg limit--I had set kbips to highest quality (10) in Audacity-file was over 20 Mb. Reduced the quality to 3 (as suggested on that page) and it is now 6.7Mb-for 14 mins. Great improvement, and with no detectable deterioration of quality.
It would be nice to have a how to page that mentions these things instead of spending hours over things going wrong and hunting for answers.
Ah-that did the trick- I got a warning page, and just went ahead-it's done!
Now the tricky bit: adding the tags and stuff in myriad pages.... Oh for a how to ...
Ok-think I've added all i need to. If anyone wants to check, see my contrib page. What a palaver. Still, should be quicker next time. This has taken nearly 24 hours in all. Mrdallaway 05:02, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Dinosaur is done. The tagging part went smoother this time (Oh I DO hope I've done it right!--If anyone sees errors in what I've done to all the various lists, per-leeeze let me know how to get it right--I want to keep doing this stuff!). Of course, being 40-odd minutes, the file was much bigger, so I reduced the Ogg quality to almost 0 in Audacity and it came in at about 16Mb. Still took a long time to upload, but it got there. I found some info about a 20Mb limit. I will have to go hunt all this stuff down and put it together in one place for future newbie contributors; I can understand how some people might be put off by the tech difficulties on their first experience-we need a sort of 'crossing the pons asinorum' section. Someone has started that and encouraged me to contribute. Maybe I'll do that today instead of Palladio.
Also to do: Tidy-ups 1) mark the two sites I used for the pron of dinosaur names. 2) listen again to Dinosaur--I took a guess at some names and they may not be right--I checked most of the ones I was unfamiliar with, but, time... 3) there are a couple minor edits to the text of D needed (just mistakes I noticed) 4) some people have not done all the tagging on their spoken stuff-this needs fixing (boring... but someone has to ...) 5) fix the lists of requests: I did Treaty of Devol in all innocence, as it was on the SFA page as posssible upcoming Page of the Day, only to discover after 24 hours work that it had already been featured 6 months ago!!! Pi**ed off might describe how I felt. So those lists are not in synch. They need checking (once again, boring... but ...) Happy New Year, Ya'll!!! Mrdallaway 04:43, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
