Parsons the New School Summer Intensive Studies
Parsons, the New School for the Design, offers summer programs in the months of June and July through their Summer Intensive Studies. Courses are available to all ages ranging from Pre- College, College/Adult and Graduate Programs. Students have the ability to study in New York, Paris, Mumbai, Peru, and London. Courses are meant to supplement current education, advance a professional resume, or develop portfolio ready material.
Parsons has recently changed the structure of their programming and begun to offer a much broader range of programs as well as offer courses to a larger age demographic.
Courses:
editFor students grade 3 – 12, the Parsons’ Pre-College Academy meets once a week on Saturday mornings throughout the fall and spring in co-ordinance with the school semester and for two weeks in August. Fall/Spring classes are structured into 11-week segments, to offer consistent programming throughout the school term. Students are divided by grade level in elementary, middle and high school groups.
High School Students (Grades 9 through 12) are offered a certificate program to help prepare artwork and presentations for college admission applications.

Out- of- Class Assignments: Pre- College Academy students are expected to complete short homework assignments that will supplement and re-enforce classroom material. The purpose of these assignments is to encourage students to work independently and develop the skills learned in classroom.
Models:
Senior Level (Grade 9- 12): Nude models may be used in classes
Junior and Elementary – Level (grade 3- 8): Clothed models will be used exclusively
Supplies: Students are required to provide their own art supplies; supply lists will be provided on the first day of class for fall/spring and emailed to students before the start of summer classes.
High Schools Students are introduced to a college level experience in art and design. Students entering their junior or senior year and recent high school graduates may enrol in this program.

Courses Offered:
Explorations in Drawing (July 8- 30, 2016)
This course works to introduce students to drawing as an integral part of the design process and an indispensable tool for media arts. Non-traditional methods, media, traditional and theories of drawing are explored.
Graphic Design Workshop (July 8- 30, 2016)
In this course, students are given hands- on instruction in creative problem-solving techniques and the basics of expressive typography and of form. Students will learn to employ a narrative and storytelling techniques, as well as discover design research, documentation, implementation, and analysis.
Fashion Design Process (July 8- 30, 2016)
This course is an introduction to the fashion design process. Students will be placed into groups to complete projects as well as expected to complete individual assignments. Students will develop fashion pieces through innovative 2D and 3D production methods. In addition to fashion design, students will be exposed to branding and merchandising basics to develop the students understanding for consumer behaviour and targeting markets.
Paris Trend Spotting (July 8- 30, 2016)
Students will focus on the concepts of fashion trends, analyze trends and follow their influence on the positioning of consumer products in the marketplace as well as evaluate marketing decisions. Students through workshops and observation, analysis, and applied design thinking they will be able to develop and identify a trend and convey it to a broader audience.
Photography: Storytelling (July 8- 30, 2016)
This course focuses on photography techniques, the aesthetics and the theory of images.
Introduction to Design and Management (July 8- 30, 2016)
In this course, students will learn how to approach management as a strategy intensive process that combines business savvy and design innovation.
Drama, Film, and Writing at the New School
editSummer Acting Intensive for Stage (June 27 – July 22, 2016, / Age 15+)
Students will develop stage acting techniques and skills through training, coaching, workshops, and artistic engagement in a four- week, four- credit course.

Filmmaking Intensive (July 5 – 29, 2016 / Age 16+)
editStudents will learn about the practice and history of creating movies that provoke, engage, inform and delight audiences. Students will study 16mm filmmaking and high- definition digital techniques and tools.

College and Adult Level
editStudents who are 18 years old and have at least one year of university completed or students who are 19 years of age or older by program commencement on June 1, 2016, for Session 1 or July 6, 2016, for Session 2 may enroll in this summer program. The program is to be used to complement a full- time degree or to gain exposure to design courses that will enable the student to achieve professional and academic goals. (Citations) Students also use this program to build skills and portfolio pieces necessary for acceptance to graduate programs.

Summer Intensive Studies in Constructed Environments: (June 27 – July 29, 2016, / Ages 19+)
editStudents will be given the opportunity to explore interior design, architecture or industrial design while preparing a portfolio for admission to college/university level programs. The course will develop measuring, drafting, model- making, and digital design skills as well as bring studies on a number of field trips to galleries, firms and organizations like the Architecture Centre, MoMA, and the Storefront for Art and Architecture.

Parsons Paris
editStudents have access to Paris’ “unparalleled” resources (Parsons, 2016) through intensive study on a variety of subjects. Parsons Paris is a three- week, three- credit program taught at Parsons Paris.
