Career
edit2014–15: Career beginnings
editDias began his music career when he met rapper Father working as a visual director and later joined his underground label Awful Records in 2014. He released his debut mixtape, Theater Fiasco, later that year. In 2015, he released a trilogy of EPs titled TELEFONE TRILOGY.
2016-present:
editIn 2015, Memphis rapper Young Dolph hired Dias to direct his visuals. After hearing Dias' music, Dolph encouraged Dias to focus on becoming a full-time rapper. The two later released a collaborative mixtape titled New Money, Old Habits and went on tour. After a falling out with Father, Dias left Awful Records.
After turning down a deal with Dolph's Paper Route Empire label, Dias signed with Kelechi's newly formed label BLK STNDRD Records along with a joint venture deal with Atlantic Records in 2016. He released his first mixtape under the label, Free Food, Free Über that summer. In 2017, he was featured on the hit single "Undercover" by Kehlani, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was nominated for three Grammys at the 60th Grammy Awards including Song Of The Year. Dias also opened for Kehlani during select dates of the North American leg of her SweetSexySavage Tour. He released his debut album Rose Gold Necklace on July 7, 2017 and was executive produced by Juicy J. The song "No Apologies" featuring Kehlani, from the album, reached number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was announced in October 2017, that Dias would co-headline with T-Pain for his “Golden Roses Tour”.
He released his sophomore album, Iceberg Slim, with much controversy surrounding the album's cover art delaying the album several times. Eventually, the album was released May 11, 2018. The album's singles had considerable success. The album's first single "Vibe" featuring Khalid and Calvin Harris peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. He then followed by the single Alright featuring Pharrell Williams. The single was a commercial success across the charts, peaking at #3, with both songs becoming his most successful charting lead single at the time. The remix of Alright was released on May 11, 2018 and featured J. Cole. On February 10, 2019, Dias won four Grammy Awards at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Music Video for ''Alright'', and Best Rap Performance for "Clique" off BLK STNDRD's compilation album. On January 3, 2020 Dias released his highest-charting song, "All Day", featuring Burna Boy, which spent seven non-consecutive weeks at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached number-one in the United Kingdom. Dias later released a remix with Kendrick Lamar. On May 29, 2020, he announced on Twitter that his fourth studio album, Black Skinhead, would be released on June 6, 2020. Controversies
editEminem
editFollowing Eminem's freestyle at the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards in which he criticized Donald Trump, Dias took to Twitter and called the freestyle "trash" and later called Eminem "garbage" and "overrated". Eminem responded to Dias in the remix to his song “Chloraseptic”. Eminem later dissed Dias once again on his album Kamikaze.
Joe Budden
editRapper and talk show host Joe Budden slammed Dias for his Eminem tweets on his show Everyday Struggle. Dias later fired back calling Budden an "irrelevant woman-beater". The two have since reconciled.
Iceberg Slim album cover
editOn March 27, 2018, Dias released the cover art to his album iceberg slim. The cover depicted a group children draped in traditional Arab keffiyah and various instruments resembling weapons and a picture of a dead, bloodied Donald Trump below. The cover generated a great amount of controversy for the graphic images. The cover garnered nationwide media attention after Trump and various members of the Trump family responded to the photo, including his son Donald Jr., and his daughter Ivanka Trump himself threatened to have Dias arrested, and called for Atlantic Records to drop Dias from the label. He also claimed he was prepared to take legal action if the cover was not taken down. Dias was placed under a federal investigation after the cover was released and was placed on a no-fly list for potential terrorists as well. The original album cover eventually was released with the image of Trump being edited out.
