N198UA was a Boeing 747-422 that flew for United Airlines until it was retired and was scrapped to make the Scaled Composites Stratolaunch. The Boeing 747 mostly flew to international destinations from the United Airlines hubs of San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX).

[edit]The plane was first flown in 5 August 1997. The plane was a Boeing 747-422, powered by 4 Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. It had serial number 28716.[1][2]
History
[edit]On June 9, 1999, the 747 was involved in an incident as Flight 890, where a flight attendant was injured. The incident happened over the Pacific Ocean. [3] On May 18, 2009, the plane did it's last flight before being scrapped.[4]

Background

[edit]The aircraft was a 10 year old Cessna Citation Latitude registered as N523QS. The aircraft was manufactured in 2016 and had the serial number, 680A0061. Its certificate was issued in 2025 and had an expiration date in 2032.[8]
Accident
[edit]The aircraft took off from San José del Cabo-Los Cabos International Airport at 6:18 PM local time on a flight to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Due to an unknown emergency, the aircraft attempted to land at Laredo International Airport, but turned toward a highway and crashed, killing one of the passengers.
