When I first found out I was being asked to write about heroes in America, and whether or not we still had any, my first thought was “Well, that’s a silly question. Of course we still have heroes!” Suddenly I was flooded by all the different types of heroes we had around us, some of which we don’t normally regard as heroes. A hero is normally defined as someone who does something amazing for the sake of others. There are tons of people like that. Writing this essay will be a piece of cake! Firefighters, policemen, you all have heard about them being amazing heroes all your life, so much so that it seems to drone over you whenever you hear it. They really do a lot for us and definitely fit under the term “hero”. In fact, let’s extend the term “hero” to even more community members. Teachers who go the extra mile for their students are heroes, obviously. Anyone who will take their time and help a child learn is a hero. And I’m not just saying that because a bunch of teachers will be reading this! Really! I could say something about heroes in 9/11, but I think that’s been overdone. Really, anyone who goes so far as to help so many people in a time of peril, whatever it may be, is a hero. Hmmm… sandwiches… television shows… grrr, thinking of heroes is hard work... A hero can be anything from a helping hand to a kind word on a bad day. The fact that anyone is capable of being a hero is evidence that they still exist today.
