Biography and Education
editAugusta was born on 14 of March 1948, in Italy. She completed her Sociology studies in Milan, and made several attempts in the political landscape. In 1966 she decided to take a cameraman course to document the liberation wars in Vietnam.
Career
editIn April of 1968, Augusta Conchiglia arrived clandestinely in Angola with director Stefano de Stefani to report on the ongoing Armed Struggle of National Liberation. During the preparation of the project, the pair visited Stefano’s friend Joyce Lussu, a figure of Italian politics. Joyce started taking an interest in the political prisoners worldwide that were writers, poets, and the so-called ‘men of culture’. In 1962, After receiving a message with the headline from a newspaper titled ‘Agostinho Neto, Angolan nationalist leader is arrested in Portugal’, Joyce visits her editor and asks him for support to go to Portugal to visit Agostinho Neto. Joyce went to Portugal and was denied by Portuguese authorities to visit Agostinho Neto. However, Joyce got access to Agostinho’s poems and returned to Rome. Joyce wrote the 1st edition of Agostinho Neto’s poems – in this context, Joyce was able to mobilize several French intellectuals such as Jean-Paul Sartre, creating a petition that eventually led the Portuguese to release Agostinho Neto from prison. Lussu was the one who incited Conchiglia and de Stefani to report on the struggle that was taking place in Angola. After leaving Rome, in January 1968, Conchiglia and Stefani made reports for Italian television in Egypt and Zambia, to guarantee the Angolan project. From Lusaka, in Zambia, they left for the Angolan border in a van. Two days later they arrived at the Kassamba border base at night.
In Angola, guided by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) guerrillas, Augusta and Stefano travelled hundreds of kilometres in the liberated areas of Moxico and Cuando-Cubango. With two Nikon F's, Conchiglia took thousands of photographs, a small part of which was published in Guerra di Popolo in Angola (1969) an album – by Lerici, in Italy.
