Melaneus of Oechalia

I visited the Melaneus of Oechalia article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: it is referred to as a stub, there is debate on who his wife was, and he only has Apollo listed as a parent.

A wikipedia stub is an article that is too short to provide more than the basic knowledge of a topic. This article fits that description perfectly as all of the given information fits into 3 short paragraphs. Though the paragraphs are short, they do provide a basic family tree and setting for Melaneus' life. The article gives a brief overview of his heritage with active links back to the greek literature it was found in. One particularly informative site has the texts in both the original Greek and modern English. The spellings of names and places in this article are all correct but some editing could be done to the grammar of the piece as many sentences have a rough flow. This article could be lengthened by the addition of how Melaneus was born, how he met his wife, or the mention of any events during his reign.

The longest part of the article is Melaneus' biography which highlights the debate of who his wife is and his children. One account says his wife was Stratonice of Calydon, who bore his two children. The other claims that he was married to Oechalia, which is what he named his kingdom. However, neither Stratonice nor Oechalia have Wikipedia pages or links to lore backing their position. Both of Melaneus' children have Wikipedia pages with active links to lore proving their parentage which leads me to believe that Stratonice is his true wife or that he was involved with both women.

The family tree in this article appears unfinished. While Melaneus' wife and children are given good descriptions, his father Apollo is mentioned only once and how Apollo made Melaneus is not included. His mother is not mentioned at all and no alternative creation is provided by the author. However, I did some research and the lore does state that he was a son of Apollo borne by Koronis. It also says that he was gifted in archery and because of this was believed to be a son of Apollo and Apollo later claims Melaneus to be his son in an argument. This article fails to mention that his mother, the fact that Melaneus was a mortal son of Apollo or give any information on the Dryopes of which Melaneus was king.

About Me

My interests include gardening, reading, painting, drawing, and singing. Although most of my time is given to church, school, work, and taking care of my pets. I grew up with a wide variety of animals at home and even now have fish, dogs, and chickens. I especially enjoy bettas as each one has such unique character, unlike more docile schooling fish like guppies. I also have a passion for studying languages; so far I have studied german and spanish, and I am currently learning arabic. I've always enjoyed reading but often authors will include things I don't know about, becuase of this I end up going down Wikipedia rabbit holes quite often. The website was especially useful for my first read through of Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my favourite books. Once I finish my associates degree I hope to go into architecture and interior design.

My Wikipedia Interests

While I wouldn't consider reading Wikipedia articles a hobby, I do end up on this website a lot. I generally am only here to research plants or people, but I wouldn't be opposed to editing articles later on. While I love reading, I know writing has never been my strong-suit as I tend to jump around with my thoughts. Despite this, I'm pretty good at editing other people's work as I can focus on a single problem until it's been solved. If I do decide to work on any content in the future, it will most likely only be editing of preexisting pages.
