Abnormality is an American death metal band formed in Massachusetts in 2005. The band started as a side project but later became more of a priority to the members after a few years. They were launched into popularity when a song from their 2007 Demo, Visions, was included as a playable bonus track in the rhythm game, Rock Band 2. As of 2012, they have released one demo, one EP and are about to release their debut full-length in June.

History

Formation, popularity & Contaminating the Hive Mind (2005-present)

The band began when vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy performed a cover of Desperate Cry by Sepultura with local band, Teratism. Afterwards, Teratism drummer Jay Blaisdell, bassist Michael O'Meara and Sundaramurthy decided to form a side-project with O'Meara on lead guitar. After a short search for rhythm guitarists, they found Jeremy Henry to fill the role. Over the period of recording their 2007 Demo, they went through many bassists, currently not named or revealed.
While Sundaramurthy was working on concept art for Harmonix, she saw an opportunity to be in their rhythm game, Rock Band 2. She submitted the song Visions and it appeared as a bonus track in the game's September 2008 release. This launched the band into the mainstream, however not without heavily mixed reception among listeners not used to the type of music. After this, however, the band released the demo onto iTunes, where Visions became an especially popular track. The band finally found a permanent bassist in 2009 when they found Josh Staples, however O'Meara left soon after while attempting to write a full-length album. The band found Ben Durgin as a replacement in early 2010, who helped finish writing an EP titled The Collective Calm in Mortal Oblivion which was independantly released in October 2010. While not commercially successful, the EP was a modest critical success.
The band went on a few tours over the remainder of 2010 and most of 2011, until announcing a new record via their official YouTube channel in mid-late 2011. The record was recorded in Q4 2011, and four video logs were posted on the progress. The band announced their signing to Sevared Records, the status of the album, the album's title, Contaminating the Hive Mind, and released the album's artwork via Facebook on April 2, 2012. The band started the Contaminating the US Tour in support of the album, updating Facebook with their shows and album news. The album's tracklist and June 1 release date were disclosed on May 4, 2012.
