Hi.
FINAL REFLECTIONS ON WIKIEDU: AFPRL290.26
editFrom this Hip Hop course I learned that women are severely underrepresented and misrepresented. They were involved every step of the way from contributions to the first hip hop parties, to the production of the first hip hop record. Rap is also highly misogynistic and its vulgar and derogatory rhetoric should be taken into consideration every time I listen to a mainstream song. I also learned that, Latino/as had a huge part in the creation of hip hop in the South Bronx. One of the things I was aware of but didn’t give notice to was that Hip Hop isn’t just rap music but rather a culture that was built from graffiti to DJing then breaking and finally coming to MCing. One thing I thought I would never see but was excited to read was Schloss’ pieces. I never knew that Hip Hop ethnography existed and I found it refreshing to see someone do research through speaking with the players involved in the DJing community rather than doing isolated research alone. I learned that I really am not good at sitting down and working and that it is something I have to improve on with deliberate practice. Paraphrasing is an important tool to learn and that when used efficiently, especially on Wikipedia, I can impart my take on a subject while still maintaining an air of objectivity. From my book, Hip Hop Family Tree by Ed Piskor, I learned that Hip Hop has a long and complex origin and that it isn’t a linear history. I also found that the book gave me important insight into the people that built up the culture and their unique personalities. Grandmaster Flash, for instance, was a genius of sorts and had a good mind for business. I also saw the influence Sylvia Robinson had on the industry. Students should edit Wikipedia because as students we have constantly been told that we don’t have authority or power, directly or indirectly, and these exercises help give us a sense of the ability we have in influencing and changing society on the small scale level of Wikipedia at a minimum. Wikipedia hip hop articles In particular should be edited because the editing community is led by a non-diverse group of individuals who for the most part are privileged whereas hip hop is by and for the diverse, largely oppressed, minority groups of people. It’s important for these people to leave their take on a matter even if the goal is to be non-partial on Wikipedia. Wikipedia editors can learn from hip hop that collectivism and working together is important for the survival and thriving of the community. Hip Hop is the most influential music and culture in the world right now so that in of itself makes it important to study. The study of its history and culture is important for racial understandings, sexual understandings, economic understandings and the progress of equality. This course should be twice a week rather than once a week. It is easy to lose focus when you aren’t forced to focus on the subject at least twice a week. Besides that I loved the course. Finally, I learned I am biased, plain and simple. Knowing that helps me right the wrong thinking my brain unconsciously does.
