About Me

edit

Welcome to my Wikipedia user page. I am a college student working towards a business degree and this Fall quarter (2020) I am taking an English class, and the first assignment is creating this page. I am finding this assignment to be surprisingly interesting as I learn more about a site I have frequented for years whenever I am searching for information.

I am a mother of 2 great kids, one of which I am working on grooming for college herself. She is only in 8th grade, but I believe it is never too early to encourage your child not to take the same path you did but instead to take the one you wish you had. I also have a 3rd grader who keeps us busy with his year around sports activities. As a family we enjoy spending time with friends as often as possible and getting outdoors. Since we live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, there are always sights to take in and beauty to behold. Sometimes we will just get in the car and drive. We love a good road trip whether just a day trip or down the coast.

In my free time, I enjoy patchwork quilting and knitting [1] which are novice skills at best and self-taught from YouTube tutorials, but I find them to be very therapeutic and eventually I would like to find a sewing or knitting club I could spend time at working expanding my knowledge and skillset.

My Wikipedia Interests

edit

Primarily, but not limited to, a first source of information on movies, books, TV shows and famous people past or present. I like to see what their real name is, date of birth (or death), what nationality they are or religion. I am so accustomed to the set up Wikipedia offers that it is my go-to for generalized information. I would say I visit at least once daily. I appreciate that it is a collaborative site so usually by the time something new is "leaked" to the public, by the time I Wiki-search I find the information in as much entirety as I can find via the World Wide Web.

Article Evaluation

edit

In late 2018 I was volunteering at a local cat rescue when I met a feline companion I just could not live without. Never having much interaction with cats or exposure in general up until then, I was interested in learning more about the breed. I visited the Tabby cat article on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: etymology, history, and citations.

Etymology

There is a blurb in this article that states the name “Tabby” is indicative of a female cat which could have been relation to the shortened form of the name “Tabitha”. However, this may lead the reader to believe that "tabby" is used to describe female striped cats and does not make it clear that it is an incorrect assumption some people have.

History

In this section, the article gives a couple of examples which include statements such has “It might be assumed that medieval cats were tabbies.” And “One writer believed this to be untrue”. These are irrelevant to the article, they are biased, opinion-based statements that are not backed up by cited information.

Citations

Although there are many citations for this page, there are a great deal that are unrelated to tabbies and cats. Then, when you come to the "Notable Examples", there are many examples given in reference to cartoon characters and the like, but no citations or links to confirm any of these to be factual or related to the article.

Summary

This article started strong and included some great information about different types of tabbies, their markings and references famous tabbies. However, the article did not mention things like behaviors, how the animals prowl or hunt, eating habits or dietary information. Towards the end of the article it seems like the writing lost momentum and may have been a rushed finish.
