SANGEET ACHARYA ABANINDRA MAITRA ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS. The Academy was founded in 1984,with it's head office at Kolkata.It is the largest academy of Indian music and dance, affiliated to Prayag University.(1) In time there were several branches at Kalyani, Kharagpore, Jalpaiguri,Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai,Bangladesh, London, France, Germany, U.S.A, Japan etc.(2) There are highly educated teachers and a large number of students. The motive is to promote the Indian classical music and dance. It has several courses on Instrumental, vocal, dance along with crafts, drawing, fine arts etc. COURSES- Two years degree courses on sitar, sarod,violin, flute,santoor, tabla,vocal streams consists of Kheyal,thumri, bhajans, modern songs,Rabindra Sangeet, all types of Indian classical dance, crafts and drawing.. Six years Sangeet pravakar and Sangeet prabin courses on the same, as above. These have both theoretical and practical courses and yearly examinations. The successful students are rewarded with mark sheets, a certificate of merit and a silver disc. It also has an annual competition for the MOHON title. which is in memory of the legendary sarod player pandit Radhika mohon Maitra. The toppers, champions are rewarded with the MOHON title,a silver medal and a draft of a decent amount. They perform in the annual conference of the Academy. The brilliant students are chosen for the forty five years courses of the academy, under great teachers. This is a specialized training, it has good many rules and regulations, minimum eight hours rewaj, practice, couple of hours of reading books on music,in the Academy library, along with pranayam,breathing exercises,meditation,yoga,simple diet and attires. DANCE The dance genre has all types of Indian classical dances like Kathak, Kathakali,Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Monipuri,Kuchipudi,Mohiniyattam,others.Also some Indian folk dances like Phulpati, Gaur maria, Panthi, Jawara etc. FINE ARTS There are two and five years courses which teach to make Indian state wise regional handicrafts made of wood, stone, brass also on cloth like the Pipli art of Odissa, mainly based on the ancient Indian sculptures and innovative ideas. DRAWING This also has two, five years courses on painting,theoretical, practical and examinations with emphasis on ancient Indian art, Mughol art, French art,fine arts. (3) Most of the branches have a big number of class rooms, Library, Canteen, Academy Hall for concerts, room for sports and a play ground. THE ACADEMY LIBRARY The Academy library has a huge collection of valuable books. Unfortunately, some of these are out of print for nearly thirty years now. The list would be too long, all you notice is a mountain like stock of valuable books and regular journals on important topics all over the library. The students are allowed to order for cups of tea, coffee, snacks etc while they go through the books.
