Lynn Johnson is an American photographer known for her contributions to National Geographic, Sports Illustrated and Life.[1]
Biography
editLynn Johnson was placed for adoption when she was born.[2] Johnson received her bachelor's degree in photojournalism in 1975 from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Upon graduating, Lynn became the first female[3] staff photographer at the Pittsburgh Press where she remained until 1982.[4] Upon leaving the Press, Lynn became an independent photographer. She has worked on more than 20 stories for National Geographic Magazine, worked for Sports Illustrated and Life. (need to cite more...)
In 2004, she received her master's degree at the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University, graduating as a Knight Fellow emerita.[1]
In 2013, Johnson became the first Visiting Professional in the Multimedia Photography and Design department at The Newhouse School at Syracuse University teaching both graduate and undergraduate students. [5][6]
Awards
editJohnson has won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism award for Outstanding Coverage of the Disadvantaged.[4] In January 2013, she won the third annual National Geographic Photographer's Photographer Award.[7] She is a a recipient of seven Golden Quill awards in photojournalism and World Press Photo Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1992.[8][9][10] She has also won awards from Xerox, BP, Ford Foundation, and others.

editIn 1984 University of Pittsburgh Press published her book "Pittsburgh Moments." ISBN 978-0822935018
In her time at Ohio University, she tackled the topic of hate crimes in her thesis, an exhibit titled Hate Kills.[11] In 2011, Johnson donated her collection to Ohio University Library's Special Collection.[1]
