Abigail Rachel "Abby" Newman (née Carlton) is a fictional character from the original CBS Daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. The role was originated in 2000, and is currently being portrayed by Marcy Rylan who stepped into the role in 2010. The character also appeared on the sister series, The Bold and the Beautiful.
Casting and creation
editAshley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) always regrets aborting her unborn child with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), so when she gets the chance to right her wrong, she steals Victor's specimen, and has herself artificially inseminated. Ashley lies to everyone claiming that a man named Christian is actually her child's father. In actuality, Ashley is telling the truth as Victor's birth name is Christian Miller.[1]
The role was originated in November 13, 2000 upon the character's onscreen birth, by twin actors Madison and Morgan Reinherz; the Reinherz twins last appeared in the role in 2003. Following a brief stint from twin actors, Amanda and Rachel Pace, the role was recast, with child actress, Darcy Rose Byrnes who first appeared on December 24, 2003. Byrnes departed from the series on January 11, 2007. Byrnes reprised the role of Abby on The Bold and the Beautiful and made her first appearance on May 11, 2007. Byrnes last appeared on B&B on August 31, 2007. At the same time, Byrnes began reappearing on Y&R starting on June 6, and concluding on November 13, 2007.[2]
Marcy Rylan began taping on April 5, 2010 and made her first appearance in the role of Abby Newman on May 18. In 2011, Rylan went on maternity leave making her last appearance on November 30, 2011. Rylan returned to the role full time on January 23, 2012. In September 2012, with the installation of a new executive producer and head writer, Rylan announced through Twitter that she had been let go.
Storylines
edit2000–07
editShortly after giving birth, Ashley marries Brad Carlton (Don Diamont) who legally adopts her as his daughter; Abby is raised with her biological cousin, Colleen Carlton, as her sister. When Abby is young, she nearly chokes on a button but Colleen manages to save her. During a battle with breast cancer, Ashley records a video tape revealing Abby's true paternity in the event of her death. Ashley survives by Abby discovers the tape anyway and reveals the truth to Victor. Upon this revelation, Victor demands that he take an active role in his daughter's life. However, her transition into becoming a Newman is not exactly a smooth one as she falls off a horse on Victor's property and also ends up hospitalized after rubbing contaminated cosmetics cream on her leg.[1] Abby and Victor forms a strong bond with Victor and though he is a bit jealous, he does not love her any less. Upon Brad and Ashley's divorce in 2006, Brad wins custody, but returns her to Ashley who moves to Hong Kong to work for Jabot International. The two eventually return to the and settle in Los Angeles for Ashley's job at Forrester Creations, while Abby comes to visit Brad periodically in Genoa City. They then relocate to London, England.[2]
2008–12
editIn late 2008, Abby returns home from boarding school when her parents reunite and Ashley and Abby move in with Victor.

editThe Naked Heiress
edit"now that I’m in the trenches, I don’t feel that way... After hitting the stage, I realized immediately that Abby and Lizzie are very different, especially when it comes to the relationships they share with their family."
With the role being recast in 2010, Abby's birth year is revised to 1988 when she is aged to 21.[56] Rylan was initially afraid that Abby was very similar to Lizzie Spaulding as they were both wealthy rich heiresses who caused trouble.[56] Rylan embraces typecast and stated that as an actor, it is good to be seen as someone who can play "good, bad, and the in-between." She garners the nickname, 'The Naked Heiress' when she flashes photographers in the lobby of Jabot Cosmetics. Branco noted that Abby is the only major character who is a hybrid of the Abbotts and Newmans. Early on, Rylan's Abby does not really show which of her families she favors more; Rylan states that Abby would eventually find a balance between the Newmans and the Abbotts and "Abby is a little more half-and-half." Marcy Rylan believes that Abby is such a rebel because she needs attention to feel like she matters to those around her. Abby's reality-TV star personality leads many to believe that Abby is the next Paris Hilton.[56]
