Article Titles

edit

Article titles should follow these five characteristics. Titles should be recognizable to anyone who is even only a tiny bit familiar with the subject of the article, as well as experts. They should also be natural, so it should be what it is properly called in English, with common names for it as redirects to it. This ties in with its need to be precise, distinguishing the article from similar articles. If there are many articles with the same name, a disambiguation page should be made for it. The title needs to be concise, only long enough to identify it, and consistent with the titles of similar articles. Most topics have one title that should fit all of these that is fairly obvious anyways.

With names, the commonly used name or nickname for a person, place, or thing should be used (example: Bono, not Paul Hewson; Halifax, Nova Scotia, not Halifax Regional Municipality; Caffeine, not 1,3,7-Trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione) The name commonly used in the sources should generally be used.

Next, make sure the title is neutral (see NPOV). However, if it is common but non-neutral, generally continue using the common.
