Tier 1: Damehoods

edit

Women in this tier have received either of the top two grades of most British honours; these confer the title of Dame. The top grade is Dame Grand Cross, the next is Dame Commander. The applicable orders are the Order of the Bath (damehoods abbreviated GCB and DCB for Dames Grand Cross and Commander; for very senior civil servants and military officers), the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG and DCMG; for diplomatic and foreign service), the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO and DCVO; for service to the Royal Household), and the Order of the British Empire (GBE and DBE; for contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the Civil service). It is worth noting that the DBE functions very much as the award of Knight Bachelor does for men. Not included in the list below are the automatic awards made to High Court judges on their appointment.

In terms of notability, the award of a damehood is usually held to confer inherent notability under WP:ANYBIO: "The person has received a well-known and significant award or honor, or has been nominated for such an award several times." Dames almost always have entries in Who's Who as well, which is usually held to confer notability.

The following is a list of women appointed DBE who do not appear to have articles. Entries have been extracted from the various honours list articles on WP, so they adopt the style used in the original announcement. My selection depends on whether they had links in the WP article itself, so CHECK before you create an article. They are arranged by the honours list in which they were appointed DBE. I have gone back systematically from the most recent list (2017 Birthday) to the earliest honours lists in which the Order was included (it was founded in 1917).
