Willie Hirsch was a German medical illustrator accused of spying for the Soviet Union in 1960.
Biography
editHirsch was arrested by the FBI in New York City on October 27, 1960, and accused of "conspiring to obtain information pertaining to our national defense for transmittal to Soviet Russia."[1] He was arrested with Igor Melekh, head of the Soviet documents translation section at the United Nations.[2] Hirsch was born in Germany and worked as a freelance medical illustrator in America.[3] Hirsch was accused of attempting to obtain aerial photographs of Chicago for the Soviet Union.[4]
