I am a student at Rice University, and am currently a freshman at Brown college. This semester I am taking the course Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities. I would like to contribute to articles relating to poverty and environmental concerns.
I plan to create a page titled Water Supply and Sanitation in Zimbabwe. This page would provide a history of water supply and sanitation efforts in Zimbabwe, a current overview of the infrastructure and government organizations that deal with water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe, a list and description of efforts of NGOs and aid branches of foreign governments that are helping to improve water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe, and a description of current issues and future plans for helping to change water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe. In addition I will add a section dealing with environmental concerns regarding water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe and a section about human concerns, which will endeavor to make the connection between the general poor quality of life in Zimbabwe and the poor quality and quantity of water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe. The sources I plan to use for this article include, but are not limited to, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, African Development Bank Group, and Water Sanitation Program scholarly reports, studies, and factual overviews. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions about what should or should not be included and used for this article.
I plan to add information to two previously existing wikipedia pages: Firstly, I will expand and rename the Climate Change section on the Marshall Islands page. The new name will be Effects of Climate Change and I will make the section more comprehensive by connecting global warming and sea level rise to the loss of available land on the Marshall Islands, and the storms and droughts which are occurring more frequently on the islands. In addition I will bring the section up to date by researching and citing many articles from the last two to three years, particularly climate change studies. I will then connect this scientific data to how rising temperatures and particularly rising sea levels is threatening the way of life and culture of the Marshall Islands, thusly negatively impacting human capabilities and threatening basic human rights. I will analyze the economic, social, and cultural responses and alterations due to climate change. Lastly I will describe and analyze the international response, primarily the UN’s response, to helping Marshall Islanders as they cope with these incredible changes. The second addition I will make, is to the Island Nations section of the Sea Level Rise wikipedia article. I will expand the given examples of island nations threatened by sea level rise with the addition of the Marshall Islands. Also, I would like to connect the scientific aspects of this section to human capabilities by analyzing how rising sea levels are affecting and changing traditional life styles. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions about what should or should not be included and used for these articles.
