During the World War II in Yugoslavia, Partisans formed 54 army divisions, 2 aviation divisions, 4 Italian divisions and 9 divisions of People's defense. These units operated independently or as a part of task force, corps or armies. They were usually formed by several brigades. The average size of divisions changed over the course of the war, from 1942 to 1945 the average size of a division grew from around 3000 to over 5000 soldiers. All divisions except for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd were formed on territorial basis and were commanded by national, provincial or regional staff. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions were formed by proletarian and assault brigades from various parts of the country, these divisions were under the direct command of the Supreme Headquarters.[1]
